For over 15 years, our colleagues at Gast in Benton Harbor, Michigan (USA), have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the senior population in their community through the annual “Rake a Difference” event. Organized by United Way of Southwest Michigan, this initiative focuses on assisting senior citizens by raking their leaves every year in November.
Like any good role model, others start to follow
The raking spirit has made its way to Rochester, New York where employees at IDEX Health & Science and Pulsafeeder were inspired to host their inaugural Rake a Difference event in 2024.
In its second year, 23 employees collectively raked and cleared leaves from nine local homes, covering an impressive 2.5 acres and hauling away 8 truckloads, 40 tarp-loads, and over 120 bags of leaves. In addition to the hands-on work, the IDEX Foundation also donated $20,000 to partnering nonprofit Lifespan which offers over 30 essential services to older adults and caregivers throughout the city of Rochester.
From humble beginnings to collective success
In its initial years, Gast’s participation in community-wide event was minimal, with only a small group of about 5-6 employees participating. However, with the establishment of the IDEX Foundation in 2014 and a growing emphasis on community involvement, Gast’s participation significantly expanded.
This year, around 50 employees volunteered, divided into five raking teams with home assignments from United Way of Southwest Michigan. This growth in participation is also reflected in the number of senior citizens served over the years, with a total of 3,466 seniors benefiting from the annual event.
Gast’s partnership with United Way began nearly half a century ago. When United Way streamlined its efforts to specifically aid the senior population with the “Rake a Difference” event 15 years ago, Gast eagerly adapted to this new focus.
Over time, the event took on different forms and employees took on the responsibility of making the it their own. Recognizing that not all employees are able to engage in the physical activity of raking leaves, Gast introduced the packing of personal care kits, a suggestion from an employee. This not only increased involvement but also ensured that a broader segment of the workforce could contribute meaningfully.
