Technological changes in proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzes are changing the value proposition for green hydrogen, opening new long-term viability opportunities for manufacturers.
In a recent POWER magazine article, Matt Behrns and Alex Papandrew of Mott Corporation explore three key trends shaping the future:
Reduced precious metal coatings to cut costs;
Thinner membranes for improved efficiency, and;
Optimized cell designs for enhanced durability.
“Experts have long deemed electrolyzers as a central technology for meeting our “carbon peak and neutrality” goals, but substantive investments have lagged due to high manufacturing costs. What these recent advancements demonstrate, however, is that the long-term viability of electrolyzers is closer than many realize,” they write.
Alex is Senior Program Manager for Clean Energy at Mott, and earned a Ph.D., in Materials Science from Caltech. Matt is VP and General Manager of Clean Energy and Marketing for Mott.
